connecting our community

Community Kitchens volunteers support our mission to build community and solidarity through food. Our CK Home Chef Program volunteers bring together their own family members, friends and community members to share treasured family recipes for Oakland Town Fridges where anyone who needs a meal can take one. Town Fridges are community run and located in Oakland food deserts. CK partners with Mandela Partners to support BIPOC Bay Area farmers by providing fresh produce to our volunteers for meal preparation. Our volunteers also support community events East Oakland Collective’s Feed the Hood. Over 2000 meals arev distributed along with hygiene kits and snack packs. CK Home Chefs support Feed the Hood events by preparing side dishes for bagged lunches and assisting with meal prep.

Map of Oakland’s Town Fridge Network

Town Fridges are a community-run grassroots effort located in neighborhoods that experience high levels of food insecurity.

Community members can take what they need or share what they can. Town Fridges are publicly accessible and open to all community members. Anyone can open up a fridge anytime and pull out free food, from eggs to fresh produce. CK stocks with restaurant meals on Mondays and CK Home Chef meals 7 days a week.

Many fridges are emptied within 24 hours.
